The Chronicle of Higher Education is a news service for faculty members and administrators of U.S. colleges and universities. The Chronicle publishes online and print news and magazines, available by subscription. The newspaper is subscribed to by more than 70,000 academics and has a total readership of 350,000.

Challenges
The Chronicle used more than a dozen data silos to track subscriber information, user behavior, and other important metrics. With data segregated into separate channels with different reporting styles, it was difficult to look holistically at sales and revenue and to measure the success of product offerings. Additionally, efforts to build a data warehousing platform from the ground up failed to address The Chronicle’s immediate needs.
The Chronicle needed to gain better insight into their clients to identify how to best serve their needs and compete in a saturated publications market.

Solution
UBS Corp implemented the Talend Cloud Hybrid data management system to provide comprehensive data integration, prep and stewardship, and provide better data quality. The solution included the development of automated workflows to streamline ETL/ELT from disparate sources. The Amazon Redshift Cloud Warehouse provided scalable storage, and Tableau visual analytics allowed decision makers to correlate data across channels.

Customer Response
Talend’s self-service business intelligence platform enabled Chronicle staff to organize data, providing the 360-degree client view needed to make fact-based decisions. UBS software engineers helped streamline the process, delivering a full data warehouse solution in four months and creating workflows that are intuitive and maintainable. The Chronicle is continuing to update their data warehousing infrastructure in order to enable machine learning and additional insights from AI.
